The short answer
Most adults should have a comprehensive eye exam every one to two years. Children should be checked regularly as they grow, since vision can change quickly during the school years.
Some people need an exam every year, including anyone with diabetes, high blood pressure, glaucoma risk, a family history of eye disease, or a prescription that changes often. Contact lens wearers also need a yearly exam to renew their prescription.
Why exams matter when you see fine
Conditions like glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy often cause no symptoms early on. An eye exam is the main way they're found while treatment can do the most good.
