Why contacts need a separate fitting
A glasses prescription doesn't tell us the shape of your cornea or how a lens will sit on your eye. During a fitting we measure the eye's surface, try lenses on, and check the fit and vision before finalizing your contact lens prescription.
What happens at a contact lens exam
A contact lens exam starts with a comprehensive eye exam, then adds measurements of the cornea and a fitting. We place trial lenses, check how they sit and move on your eye, and confirm your vision with them in.
If you're trying a new type of lens or wearing contacts for the first time, we may ask you to wear trial lenses for a short time and return for a follow-up so we can fine-tune the fit and power before writing your final prescription.
Lens options
Daily disposables are the easiest to care for and a healthy choice for most wearers. Toric lenses correct astigmatism. Multifocal lenses let many people see far away and read up close without reading glasses. We also fit lenses designed to slow nearsightedness in children.
Comfort and eye health
Contacts that feel dry by the afternoon, red eyes, or blurry vision are signs your lenses, solution or wearing schedule may need to change. Sleeping in lenses not approved for overnight wear and stretching replacement schedules raise the risk of eye infections. We'll check the health of your cornea at every visit.
Your contact lens prescription
A contact lens prescription is different from a glasses prescription and includes the lens brand, curve and diameter. You can buy your lenses from Costco Optical next to our office or from any retailer you choose.
Tell us before your visit
If you want to try contacts, mention it when you book so we can plan time for the fitting. Vision plans sometimes cover part of the fitting fee.

Common questions
Can I use my glasses prescription to buy contacts?
No. A contact lens prescription needs measurements of your eye's surface and a fitting, so it's written separately from your glasses prescription.
How often do I need a contact lens exam?
Contact lens prescriptions generally need to be renewed every year so your doctor can check your prescription, the fit and the health of your eyes.
Can I wear contacts if I have astigmatism?
Yes. Toric contact lenses are designed to correct astigmatism, and they're available as daily disposables and monthly lenses.
Can kids wear contact lenses?
Many children do well with contacts, especially daily disposables. We'll talk with you about your child's readiness and lens options during the exam.
